Summary

  • HBV and HCV coinfection is especially seen in areas of high HBV prevalence, due to shared modes of transmission
  • Superinfection with HCV in patients with preexisting HBV, or vice versa, can lead to more severe acute symptoms and liver failure[Liaw 2004; Liaw 2000; Lee 2000; Hytiroglou 1995]
  • Most HBV/HCV-coinfected patients have low serum HBV DNA levels and detectable HCV viremia
